Birthday Surprise

Since Mica and I started dating, I tried to convince her to get her scuba certification. She’s always found a reason not to want to go. So I quit bothering her about it. It’s definitely not a hobby I’d want to force on someone. Underwater isn’t a place to be if you don’t want to be there. Scuba diving is very safe, but not if you don’t have the right attitude about it.

So I haven’t really brought it up in months. Two days ago, Mica decided she wanted to get certified. There was a dive shop that I’d been wanting to check out (as the only one I’d been to in STL was not very impressive), so we went in last night. The shop was very nice and clean and bright and the people were very friendly. I told the guy Mica wanted to learn about diving and he launched right into his sales pitch without asking me if I was a diver. So I let him explain about the gear. I figured it was a good enough way to see knowledgeable they were, how comfortable Monica was with the people there and also how they felt about safety. Of course, he emphasized the most expensive package, but he focused on the benefits it provided and took the time to explain it in a way that a non-diver could understand. And I can’t fault him for that, because I have much of the same gear and it is superior. But I always feel more comfortable when people up-sell based on the merits of the better gear, not the shortcomings of the cheaper package.

So we’re going back tonight to sign her up for a class. It will be her birthday present. We’re looking at the weekend of the of the 23rd for the class. We’ll see what’s available.
