Oh, Bloody Hell
Back in January, our basement flooded. Just over 3″ of water covering the carpet. Enough to destroy all the carpet, some sheetrock, the baseboards as well as everything on the floor. It turned out the sump pump was disabled and we had almost 9″ of rain and 12″ of snow that month.
We replaced almost everything right away, but I waited on the baseboards. I had bought a router and was planning on making my own baseboards; but it was just too damned cold to do that in January and February. I don’t see any reason to mess with power tools when I can’t feel my hands. It wasn’t critical to have it finished and I wasn’t about to risk any fingers just to rush the job.
So it finally got warm and I made the baseboards. As we were putting them down along the back wall, we noticed a slightly damp spot on the carpet. I checked all around and couldn’t find a source of any water, so I chalked it up to either spilling something or the dogs having an accident. I sprayed it just in case and put the baseboards up. We pretty much ignored it, but Mica would occasionally insist she smelled water or mildew. I couldn’t smell anything, but my sense of smell isn’t the best. I’d check the ground though and it was dry. So we forgot about it again.
I was watering the trees in the front yard today. I came downstairs and there is water literally running down the wall. It looks like we have a bad vacuum breaker in our faucet. So I spent a good part of the evening drying the carpet and figuring out what happened. I’ve got box fans down there now, helping to finish the job. Fortunately, it wasn’t too, too bad. Most likely, I’ll have a plumber come out and replace the faucet sometime next week.
