I’m black and blue today
But, dammit, I got my blue belt.
Class went pretty well. We only did a 60 minute class last night so that we could break out the cake for our sensei’s birthday. They had done an awesome job decorating the dojo. They had black balloons everywhere, banners, and streamers hanging from the ceiling. Next week, I should have a video to post of me catching a streamer 7.5′ up with a jump kick.
After the cake, we launched into my test. My last two kata were a bit shaky, but passable. My self-defense techniques went very well. Then came the endurance portion with hundreds of kicks and punches. If you’ve ever been to a cardio-kickboxing class, it’s about the same concept, only my instructor is looking at my form, not just endurance. After about 20 minutes of that, it was on to the fighting. My instructor was fighting as well as two other students. 2 minute matches, 1 minute breaks between. I fought each person twice, 6 fights in total. Fortunately, my timing was on last night and my endurance isn’t half bad, so I was in good form for the fights. I didn’t wear down like my instructor was expecting, although I did slow the second round of fights down considerably. I did come out with some nasty bruises though and there’s a knot on my arm that’s still the size of an egg today after ice and ibuprofen.
So that was the test. In total, it ran about 80 minutes. Now it’s time to start focusing on the upcoming tournaments in the next few months.
