Scuba Carve 2005
Mica and I made the short trip out to Rolla, MO yesterday for Midwest Scuba’s 2005 Scuba Carve. Things didn’t go quite as well as we had planned.
The rules are basically this: no work can be done on the surface except for one stab into the pumpkin to help it sink. You can’t draw anything on the pumpkin before descending and the pumpkin must be 100% complete before it surfaces. And oh yeah, pumpkins are very, very buoyant.
We dropped down one of the buoys in the quarry, it turned out that it was the location of an old boat that had been sunk. It actually worked out well. I kneeled in the hull of the boat and propped the pumpkin up under the dash to help hold it down while I cleaned the pumpking out.
We had a pattern picked out to carve into the pumpkin. In theory, we would put pattern up against the pumpkin and use a spiked roller to transfer it to the pumpkin. We brought 3 copies of the pattern in case the paper ripped. Unfortunately, the patters weren’t as durable as we hoped, and they fell apart before we could even start transfering the pattern.
So I freelanced it. Came relatively close to what I remembered the pattern looking like. It was pretty damned good considering the circumstances. Unfortunately, there was a very artistic girl there that designed a huge, spooky castle. She won half of the categories. Which kind of sucked, they should have only given her the best pumpkin category and left her out of the lesser categories, but that’s just my opinion.
Still, we had a great time. Mica’s gear worked really well. She did great. Her new gear is soooo nice. I’m almost jealous at some of the features.
